Cleaning and Maintenance
Your Berkey water filter system is designed to provide a lifetime of purified drinking water for you and your family. Because of the effects water deposits and contaminants may have on your unit and the desire to keep your unit producing the most pure and best tasting drinking water possible it is necessary to clean your unit on a regular basis. The container is made of a high quality stainless steel (or dishwasher safe plastic in the case of the Berkey Light) that is easy to clean and maintain by just following a few simple instructions:
For routine cleaning you can either wash the container by hand using warm water and a mild dishwashing soap or place the unit in the dishwasher. Before doing so remove all filters, spigots and anything that is attached to the upper and lower tanks. If your water contains harmful contaminants make sure you add approximately 16 drops of household bleach to each gallon of water being used for cleaning. The best method for drying your container is to let it air dry. Reassemble the unit after it dries and resume filtering water.
